After completing her studies at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Academy of Music and Theatre (1990–1994) in Leipzig, Westermann initially performed at the Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg. She appeared in productions such as *Der Freigeist*, directed by Franziska Kohlund, and *Andorra*, directed by Valerij Grishko. She also performed at the Municipal Theatre in Chemnitz and the stages of the city of Gera.
Since the mid-1990s, Antje Westermann increasingly took on roles in TV and film. She made a strong impression as the humiliated daughter in Bernd Schadewald’s harrowing courtroom drama *Angst* (1993), which tells the story of a man killed by his family on the day of his release from prison. Her co-stars included Christian Redl and Jürgen Vogel. Director Schadewald was so impressed with the promising young actress that he cast her in his psychological thriller *Kinder des Satans* (1995). After a leading role in *Gesches Gift*, Westermann appeared alongside her husband Aljinovic in the modern fairytale *Der Strand von Trouville* (1997). She was also part of the star ensemble in Heinrich Breloer’s docudrama *Todesspiel* and had a minor role alongside Martina Gedeck in the crime film *Lea Katz – Die Kriminalpsychologin – Das wilde Kind* (1998).
Westermann quickly gained attention, leading to roles in TV series such as *Sylvia – Eine Klasse für sich*, *Zwei Brüder*, *SK Babies* (all 1998), and *Mordkommission* (1999). She later starred in the acclaimed adventure drama *Gran Paradiso – Das Abenteuer Mensch zu sein*, which took the entire crew, including director Miguel Alexandre, to an altitude of 4,000 meters. More than typical TV fare were Hans-Christoph Blumenberg’s docudrama *Deutschlandspiel* (2000) and the *Bella Block* episode *Bella Block – Am Ende der Lüge* (also 2000). Another crime thriller, *Tödliches Vertrauen*, was filmed in 2002, and in 2003, Antje Westermann shone in the youth film *Wer küsst schon einen Leguan?*, portraying an overwhelmed young mother. This role earned her an Adolf Grimme Award nomination for Best Actress.
